SRF : Solid Refuse Fuel

Municipal solid waste (MSW) management is a serious challenge if the waste is
simply collected and dumped or even if it is buried in a landfill. In order to meet
these challenges, refuse-derived fuel is one of the best options. SRF is obtained
from municipal wastes and used as an alternative fuel. In so doing, a city can
both reduce its solid waste and utilize the fuel in place of less environmentally
friendly options such as coal and oil. In addition, in Korea the introduction of
SRF facilities is expected to save the equivalent of 25.1 billion KRW in oil

By utilizing SRF not only has the issue of Korea's lack of conventional resources been addressed, and a reduction in greenhouse gas
emissions achieved but also the problem of the disposal of hazardous wastes can be dealt with. For Daesung Group there is an
additional benefit in that this project creates a green energy business synergy with Daesung's landfill gas-to-energy and CES projects.
Further, Daesung's technical prowess in renewable energy and environment is verified for export overseas.


Solid waste management involves the collection of waste mainly generated by human beings in an urban setting. It consists of
household, industrial, agricultural and bio-medical waste. In turn, these wastes can be broken down into biodegradable waste,
recyclable waste, inert waste, electrical and electronic waste, composite waste, harzardous waste and toxic waste. SRF consists
largely of combustible component of municipal waste such as plastics and biodegradable waste. SRF is an excellent choice for Korea
because the country almost completely lacks its own energy resources and because SRF successfully tackles the issues of air and
environmental pollution. Further, because the cost of operating a SRF plant is less than the cost of incinerating trash and the waste is
treated utilizing environmentally-friendly processes, there are far fewer concerns about NIMBY (not in my backyard) issues from
local residents.
